Looking back at 2024: A transformative year for Interclean and the cleaning industry
As 2024 comes to a close, we had the opportunity to sit down with Robert Stelling, Director of Interclean, to reflect on a transformative year for both the cleaning industry and the Interclean brand. From major events like Interclean Amsterdam and Shanghai to year-round content and a rebranding, 2024 has been a year of growth, innovation, and inspiration.
How would you sum up 2024 for the cleaning industry?
Robert: Looking back, 2024 felt like a turning point for the cleaning industry. Some of the exciting technologies we’ve talked about in recent years—like robotics—became widely adopted. Facility managers and clients are now actively seeking these solutions. Alongside this tech evolution, I’ve been pleased to see a continued focus on the industry’s most valuable asset: the workforce. Respecting and investing in cleaning professionals remains a key trend.
How would you describe 2024 for Interclean?
Robert: This year was very exciting for us. We introduced a reimagined Interclean brand, reflecting our mission to support the cleaning industry in growing and thriving. Our events in Amsterdam and Shanghai showcased this vision, and we’ve extended it throughout the year via online content and collaborations with industry partners.
What were the highlights of Interclean Amsterdam in May?
Robert: The feedback was incredible—some even called it the best edition ever. We focused heavily on creating experiences, with more live demonstrations, engaging keynote speakers, and entertainment to enhance networking opportunities. German Ramirez’s keynote on the need for transformation stood out, as did our first “Feel Good Friday,” a program tailored for the Dutch market.
Interclean Shanghai just wrapped up. What can you share about it?
Robert: This was the third Interclean in China but our first time hosting in the business heart of Shanghai. It gave the event a more international character, helping Chinese professionals exchange knowledge on topics like ESG and sustainability. The show also showcased China's advancements in AI and automation, providing a global platform for their innovation.
How has Interclean’s year-round content supported the community?
Robert: Our goal is to be a source of inspiration and knowledge throughout the year, not just during events. Collaborating with global experts on articles, podcasts, and other content has allowed us to keep cleaning professionals informed about trends and innovations all year long.
Interclean underwent a rebranding this year. How was it received?
Robert: The rebranding was a surprise, revealed during Interclean Amsterdam, and it was very well-received. People appreciated the modern look and feel, but also the core values it represents: experiencing the future, building global connections, and staying ahead of trends through innovation.
What industry trends stood out in 2024?
Robert: Technology and automation remained central, especially in areas like data application. ESG and sustainability were also significant, particularly in Europe with the introduction of CSRD regulations. I’m also glad the human element remained a key focus, as the workforce is at the heart of our industry.
How has feedback from 2024 shaped your plans for the future?
Robert: Feedback is integral to our planning process. This year, we introduced Interclean Industry Insights—small focus groups where visitors helped us shape the future of Interclean. While I can’t reveal too much yet, I can say we’ll focus even more on experiential elements at live events and on providing a global perspective through our year-round content.
What excites you most about Interclean and the industry in 2025 and beyond?
Robert: I’m eager to see how the industry continues to embrace new technologies like AI and advances in ESG and sustainability. For Interclean specifically, I’m excited to grow initiatives like our Spotless podcast, host the second edition of Interclean Shanghai, and begin preparations for Interclean Amsterdam 2026.
As 2024 draws to a close, it’s clear that both Interclean and the cleaning industry are ready for another groundbreaking year. With innovation, sustainability, and the workforce at the forefront, 2025 promises exciting new developments.
